How Stash works.

Pick your role below - or read both. No jargon, just the steps.

Approval

Owner decides

Borrower waits on a pending page until approved or declined.

Permanent

Theirs to keep

No return expected. Item is logged as given away.

Before you read on

The owner side lives in the Stash app - iOS first, launching soon (TestFlight now), with Android close behind. Everything below describes the app. Borrowing from a link needs no app and works today; the web owner console covers approvals and loan tracking from a browser.

Getting started

Open the Stash app and go to the Me tab. Set up your owner contact - your display name and an email or phone number. This is required before you can lend anything: it's what borrowers see as the lender identity once a loan is confirmed.

Once your contact is set, your stash URL is stash.rejog.net/{your-handle}. You can choose your handle in the Me tab. It's your public address - share it freely, or keep it just for people you invite.

Optional: toggle Enable Hints on in Settings for first-run tips during item capture.
  1. 1Tap the camera button in the center of the tab bar to open the capture flow.
  2. 2Point at the item. The app outlines it with a glowing ring. Tap to select a specific object if the scene is busy.
  3. 3In capture review, the app auto-suggests a name using on-device AI. Confirm or retype it.
  4. 4Add a room and category if you'd like - the app infers the room from your location. Tap Save.

You can also add an item manually without a photo, from the same menu.

Items are private by default. Toggle Share to web in the item editor to make it visible on your stash URL.

Lending items

  1. 1Open the item. Tap Lend (the primary CTA under the item name).
  2. 2Choose a lend mode: Instant (anyone with the link can claim immediately) or Approval (you review each request). You can also set it as Permanent for a give-away.
  3. 3Optionally set a term - an open-ended loan, a specific due date, or a duration.
  4. 4A shareable link and QR code appear. Send the link via Messages, AirDrop, email, or share the QR - whichever is easiest. One link, one loan: a lend link is spent once it's claimed, so generate a fresh one for the next borrower.
The link is a direct path to that item's borrow page. The person who taps it doesn't need the app or an account.

Instant: the loan establishes the moment the borrower accepts. No action needed from you. Use this for lower-stakes items where you trust whoever you sent the link to.

Approval: the borrower fills in their request and lands on a pending status page. You get a notification in the app and can review the request - including the proposed term - before approving or declining. You only see the borrower's contact details after you approve.

The Inbox (bell icon in the app) is where pending decisions live. You'll see:

  • Borrow requests - approve (and optionally trim the term) or decline with a note.
  • Return requests - borrower has signaled they want to return the item.
  • Extension requests - borrower is asking for more time; you approve or decline.
  • Incident reports - borrower has flagged damage or loss. You can set the item's service state (needs repair / lost / retired), and the item will disappear from your public catalog.

Managing loans

Open the Loans tab. The Lent sub-tab shows all items you've lent out - tap any row to see borrower details, the agreed term, and their contact info.

From an active loan you can also send a Nudge - a reminder to the borrower with an optional note and date. They'll see it on their status page.

  1. 1Open the item (or the loan from the Loans tab). Tap Got it back.
  2. 2Optionally take a return-condition photo. The app compares it to the photo from when you lent it - you'll see "Looks the same" or "Looks different." This comparison is done on-device.
  3. 3Confirm to close the loan. The borrower's status page updates automatically.
The condition comparison is advisory - a quick visual flag, not a definitive damage assessment.

From an active loan, tap Give Away. The item is permanently transferred - no return expected. You can attach a condition note and a photo as a record. The item is marked as Given Away and removed from your active inventory.

You can also set the lend mode to Permanent before lending, so the borrower knows upfront it's theirs to keep.

Yes. From a loan or from the borrower's profile, you can block by email or phone. A blocked contact can't create future borrow requests against your stash. You can manage blocks in Settings.

Borrowing something

  1. 1Tap the link. You'll see the item, photos, and the owner's display name.
  2. 2Fill in your name and either an email or phone number. This is how the owner reaches you once the loan is confirmed. Email is the better pick: status updates (approved, declined, extension decisions) go out by email only - there are no texts yet. Phone-only works, but then your status page is how you find out.
  3. 3Optionally propose a return date and attach a condition photo.
  4. 4Tap Request (or Borrow for instant-mode items).
Your contact is only given to the owner once the loan is confirmed - not before. See the Privacy page for the full story.

It depends on the item's lend mode:

  • Instant: the loan is active immediately. You're taken to your status page and see the owner's contact info right away - so you can arrange the handoff.
  • Approval: you land on a pending status page. The owner reviews your request and approves or declines. You'll get an email when they decide - if you gave only a phone number, check your status page instead (no texts yet).
  • Permanent: same as Instant, but no return is expected. The item is yours to keep.

No. Borrowing is intentionally accountless. There are no borrower accounts in Stash - that's a deliberate design choice.

Your loan lives at a status page URL. Bookmark it or save the confirmation email - that's your access to the loan from any device.

Managing your loan

Your status page is at stash.rejog.net/r/{your-ref}. You can get there three ways:

  • Bookmark it when you first borrow - the easiest option.
  • Check the confirmation email - it has your status page link.
  • Visit /holding - a browser-local list of all borrows on this device.

Clearing your browser data wipes the holding list - the confirmation email is your backup.

From your status page, tap Request extension and propose a new return date. The owner gets a notification in their app and approves or declines. You'll be notified by email when they decide (or watch your status page if you didn't give one).

From your status page, tap Request return. This signals to the owner that you're ready to give it back. They confirm the return from the app - which closes the loan and updates your status page to show it's complete.

Return is a two-step handshake: you signal, they confirm. This way both sides have a record of the transaction.

Use the Report incident form on your status page. Choose the severity (damage, broken, lost), add a note, and optionally attach a photo. For lost items, you can include a location if you remember where it was last.

The report goes to the owner's Inbox. They'll set a service state for the item and decide how to handle it. The loan may be closed from their side.

Yes. If the item is out on loan, you'll see a Notify me when it's free option on the item page. Enter your email and you'll get a single notification when the item comes back and is available to borrow again. Nothing else is stored - just your email and the item reference.

Lend links are single-use - once claimed, they're spent. Ask the owner to send you a new one, or visit their stash URL directly (stash.rejog.net/{handle}) and use the Ask to borrow form on the item's detail page.
